The Hospital: Business and Public Service?

A network of relationships exists among hospitals, their private or public owners, their employees—increasingly including physicians—and their patients. A far-reaching change like the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 affects each of these stakeholders and reverberates throughout the networks that connect them. Contributors analyze the conflicts inherent in a business whose mission is to serve the sick. These conflicts are often epitomized in the practice of physicians as they strive to give each patient the best possible care within the constraints imposed by the need of the hospital to survive financially.
