Women, whether they are patients or physicians, confront sex and gender stereotypes; e.g., women patients exaggerate their pain symptoms; surgery is a man’s field. While such biases can be overcome only by considering each woman as a unique individual, some gender inequities also demand changes in the social and cultural role expectations of women collectively. This month's issue examines the effects of these stereotypes on men and women in medicine.
